Chiura Obata was born in 1885 in Japan, and at the age of seven, began formal training in the art of sumi-e, Japanese ink and brush painting. He emigrated to the United States in 1903 and soon settled in San Francisco. A great outdoorsman, he loved to paint the landscape and animals of California, particularly during his many expeditions to Yosemite Valley and the High Sierras. A much-loved teacher, Obata was a long-time faculty member in the Art Department at the University of California, Berkeley. During World War II, he spent over a year in Japanese-American internment
